Gateway & Plaza

Imagining the Opening Plaza & Gateway

Every great gathering starts with a great welcome.

Imagine the Opening Plaza & Gateway as the front door to Kuumba Art Park, a place that says "come on in, there's room for you here." A landmark gateway sign, planned with House of RAD, would be an amazing entryway to an open plaza with plenty of seating, shade, and greenery, inviting you to slow down and stay awhile. A huge nod to the site's rail yard history would remind us that this ground has always been a place where people come together.

Next door, at Kuumba Juice & Coffee where you can grab a cup of coffee, smoothie, or snack is just steps away. Pick up something good, find your spot, and settle in with neighbors, friends, and family, whether it's a quick coffee break or a full-on family picnic.

Why this matters: A neighborhood deserves a front porch. The Opening Plaza & Gateway would give the community a beautiful, welcoming place to gather, linger, and celebrate, one that honors where we've been and makes space for where we're going.

What We're Dreaming Up

Three features we hope to bring to the Opening Plaza & Gateway

The Gateway Sign

A bold, eye-catching sign, created, and to be built by House of RAD, would welcome everyone to Kuumba Art Park and give the neighborhood a landmark to call its own.

Railway Seating

Seating inspired by the site's rail yard past would put a little history under your feet (and beneath you, too). It's a place to rest, chat, and remember that this ground has always connected people.

A Place to Gather

Long tables, open space, and plenty of room to spread out would make this the spot for family picnics, coffee with neighbors, and everything in between. Everyone's welcome, and there's always space for one more.
